- Citizenship: What are the ways someone is a United States citizen? Anyone born in the United States is a United States citizen. However, countless other people who are not born in the United States may claim citizenship under various conditions and circumstances. A determination that you are a United States citizen will act as a complete defense in certain cases.
- Citizenship for persons born abroad: There is a set of very important preliminary questions we ask all of our clients charged in immigration cases where their foreign/alien status is an element of the offense. We may ask where your parents and grandparents were born and what their citizenship status was. This may allow us to create a defense based not on residency but on citizenship and heritage.
- Automatic acquisition of citizenship because of parents’ naturalization: The rules for citizenship for persons born abroad focus on the status of the parents in passing citizenship to their offspring. This can render a person a citizen from birth. When someone born outside of the United States to alien parents, may acquire citizenship from their parents if one or both parents naturalize and other certain conditions are met. The person, in this case, would become a citizen of the United States upon satisfaction of a final condition.

Birmingham Criminal Defense Attorney Mr. Ingram is a native of Birmingham, Alabama. After earning his Bachelor’s Degree from Samford University, he worked for Alabama Power in Corporate Accounting. Mr. Ingram earned his law degree from Birmingham School of Law in 2002. While attending law school, Mr. Ingram worked as a law clerk in the Office of District Attorney for the Tenth Judicial Circuit in Jefferson County, Alabama. He has also served as an Assistant District Attorney in Baldwin County.
